Be Informed About Your Vehicle...
Is your vehicle equipped with a transponder system?
Many of the vehicles being produced today are transponder equipped.
The transponder systems in vehicles today consist of two main components:
the processor/interrogator (in your car)
the transponder (in your key)
When a key is placed in the ignition of a transponder equipped vehicle and turned
to the start position, the processor emits a radio frequency towards the key. The
transponder located in the head of the key receives this radio frequency, and a small
amount of voltage is generated within the key. Using the voltage, the key then transmits
back to the processor a unique code that it compares to what it has stored as a key
that operates the vehicle. If the codes match, the starter and fuel pump are enabled,
allowing the vehicle to start. In some vehicles, if the transponder is not programmed
to that vehicle, not present, or faulty, the vehicle will start but then cut off
a few seconds later after. If you are unsure of whether you vehicle is transponder
system equipped and would like to know, trust the dedicated professionals at Haley’s
to answer all your questions.
Transponder Key Prices
The price of transponder keys vary for the different years, makes, and models of vehicles out there. Different systems require different keys (high security, sidewinder, laser cut…). Different keys require different machinery to cut and program them. This results in different prices. When the dealership says that you have to go back through them for another key, don’t take their word, call us or stop by our shop location. As locksmiths, we are able to obtain tools and techniques that allow us to program keys into many vehicles. Even with our growing selection of tools and skills, there are still some vehicles that we are unable to program keys into. Vehicle manufacturers are constantly changing their transponder systems and finding new ways to discourage non-dealer key duplication and programming. We always recommend that you have at least two working keys for your vehicle at all times, whether it’s a transponder equipped vehicle or not. It’s always cheaper to have a copy made than to have keys generated from scratch.
